Hugo Tschirky was appointed full Professor of Business Management at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich) in 1982. He belongs to the Institute of Management and Business Systems Engineering and chairs the fields of General Management, Technology and Innovations Management, and Executive Management Advanced Development including the Masters courses in Business Administration.He retired on March 31, 2003
Born on January 20, 1938 he is a citizen of Mels, St. Gallen. He obtained his degree in Mechanical Engineering with majors in Process, Automatic Control, and Nuclear Engineering. Subsequently in 1968 he completed his Doctorate under Prof. W. Hälg in Nuclear Engineering. He was awarded ETH Medals for distinction for his Masters Thesis and Doctoral dissertation. From 1968 to 1971, he was engaged in the research laboratory of Gulf General Atomic, San Diego, California, USA researching the safety of nuclear power stations and fast breeder reactors. In 1971 he assumed the post of CEO at Carl Zeiss Zurich AG. Simultaneously, he concluded his second Doctorate at the ETH Zurich in Business Administration. In 1976 his career relocation took him to Cerberus AG in the function of CEO. In 1978 he attended the Senior Management Program at Harvard Business School.
His research activities are directed towards the management of technology intensive companies. Pursuing this he has initiated development of an internationally aligned education program for the future managers of technology driven enterprises. In 1992 he was occupied in a teaching and research Sabbatical at Tokyo Institute of Technology. In spring 2000 he was at the MIT as a Guest Professor. He is on the Board of Directors of various Industrial and Service companies. |
