Checklist for formatting PICMET Papers:

General
This is a summary of a more detailed document titled "Formatting PICMET Papers: Papers for Proceedings Vol.1: Book of Summaries, and Vol. 2: CD-ROM.” Click here to get this document. (in Adobe Acrobat format)

Title Block and Authors

  • Title block should be centered.  The title should be in upper and lower case, not all caps.

  • For one author, the name and address should be centered under the title block (no e-mail address).

  • For multiple authors with the same address, each name should be listed on one line, then the common address should be given below the names, on one line, all centered under the title block. For multiple authors with different addresses, each name should be given on one line with a superscript. The addresses should be given on one line each, with corresponding superscripts. All should be centered under the title block. Do not use authors’ titles (Dr., Prof., Mr., Mrs., etc.). No e-mail addresses should be shown.

Font

  • Use Times New Roman or an equivalent font. Please avoid using characters from a non-English version of the font set, such as numbers shown in circles, etc.

Type Sizes

  • 8 pt. for TABLE CAPTIONS (UPPER CASE, centered), references, tables, figure captions (centered), footnotes, subscripts an superscripts

  •  9 pt. and bold for the abstract

  • 10 pt. for authors’ affiliations, main text, and equations. Use italic for subheadings

  • 11 pt. for SECTION TITLES (UPPER CASE)

  • 12 pt. for authors’ names

  • 14 pt. and bold for the paper title

Figures and Tables

  • Figure captions should be below the figures.

  • Table captions should be above the tables.

  • Avoid placing figures and tables before their first mention in the text.

  • Use the abbreviation “Fig. 1” even at the beginning of a sentence.

References

  • Number citations consecutively in alphabetical order using the first author’s last name.

  • Use square brackets for citations [1].

  • The sentence punctuation follows the brackets [2].

  • Number footnotes separately in superscripts.1

  • Place the actual footnote at the bottom of the column in which it is cited (do not put footnotes in the reference list).

  • Place sponsor acknowledgments in an unnumbered footnote on the first page.

  • Give all authors’ names—do not use “et al.” unless there are six or more authors.

  • Capitalize only the first word in a paper title and subtitle except for proper nouns.

  • Papers that have not been published, even if they have been submitted for publication, should be cited as “unpublished.”

  • Papers that have been accepted for publication should be cited as “in press.”

  • Working papers should be cited as “working papers.”

  • Use the referencing style used in IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management. Several examples can also be found in the style guide titled "Formatting PICMET Papers:  Papers for Proceedings Vol. 1:  Book of Summaries and Vol. 2:  CD-ROM” for PICMET Proceedings and CD-ROM.”

Abbreviations and Acronyms

  • Define abbreviations and acronyms the first time they are used in the text, even after they have been defined in the abstract.

  • Only a few unambiguous abbreviations such as PICMET, IEEE, USA and MOT do not have to be defined.

Equations

  • Number equations consecutively with equation numbers in parentheses flush with the right margin.

  • Italicize Roman symbols for quantities and variables, but not Greek symbols.

  • Use parentheses and brackets to avoid ambiguities

  • Define the symbols in your equation before the equation appears or immediately following.

  • Use “(1),” not “Eq. (1)” or “equation (1),” except at the beginning of a sentence: “Equation (1) is…”

 Section Headings

  • The Roman numerals used to number the section headings are optional.  If you do use them, number INTRODUCTION, but not ACKNOWLEDGMENT and REFERENCES, and begin subheadings with letters.
